Kazumochi Kometani

Kazumochi Kometani obtained an LL.B. from the University of Tokyo in 1987 and an LL.M. from the University of Michigan Law School in 1995.

After working at Steptoe & Johnson, Washington D.C. from 1995 to 1996, he served as a Legal Affairs Officer within the Legal Affairs Division of the World Trade Organization from 1998 to 2002. He also served as the Director of the International Legal Affairs Office, Trade Policy Bureau, within the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan from 2008 to 2015, before returning to Nishimura & Asahi. Since 2004, Mr. Kometani has been a Professor at Hosei University Graduate School.

Mr. Kometani is specialized in handling international economic law issues, in particular handling dispute settlement under the WTO, FTAs, EPAs and investment agreements, as well as dealing with other trade law issues, such as anti-dumping investigations.

Mr. Kometani has authored various books and articles including “International Economic Law,” published by University of Tokyo Press in 2015 (co authored with Mitsuo Matsushita, a Professor Emeritus of the University of Tokyo).
